Network/ Systems Engineer

Lanka Education and Research Network (LEARN) is the National Research and Education Network (NREN) of Sri Lanka. A National Research and Education Network (NREN) is a specialized Internet Service Provider (ISP) dedicated to support the needs of the research and education communities within a country, and it is distinguished by support for a high-speed backbone network, often offering dedicated channels for individual research projects, in addition to providing many other services.

LEARN currently interconnect the University Grants Commission (UGC), the Ministry of Education, all the UGC funded State Universities, many public universities under other ministries, and several national research institutions, including the National Science Foundation (NSF) and Arthur C Clarke Institute for Modern Technologies.

Applications are hereby invited from citizens of Sri Lanka for the TAC Engineer position in our office located at the University of Peradeniya. This position will initially be offered as a two-year Contract basis position with the possibility of permanency based on performance.

Job Description:

Responsible for providing assistance in configuration of network devices and servers, implementation of network monitoring system, network design, preparation of technical specifications, technical evaluation, implementation of new network services and troubleshooting network and its services to LEARN member institution.

 

Qualification and Experience:

a). A bachelor’s degree in Computer Engineering / Telecommunication Engineering / Electrical and Electronic Engineering / Computer Science (4 years degree)

and
 

b). Prior experience in network and system design, deployment, monitoring, and maintenance would be an added advantage

 

Attitude:

LEARN is looking for a talented young graduate who has experience and interested in working on following areas.

  • ability to visit remote LEARN member institutes located around the country; not every day but few times a month.

  • ability to work after normal working hours when required and in case of critical issues

  • concern on failures of the network and its services on 24/7 basis

  • working on Linux and BSD platforms for network services such as Web, Mail, DNS, LDAP, Radius, Proxy, SASL, Virus and Spam filters

  • dealing with open standards and open source software/tools

  • dealing with network/systems security

  • dealing with VOIP systems and IP multicast

  • development and implementation of new networks and their services

  • monitoring and troubleshooting Networks/Systems

  • actively handling customer requests while supporting them friendly

  • dealing with other local network operators in troubleshooting and in new deployments

  • ability in scripting (PHP, Perl, Python, etc.)

  • ability and willingness to teach/share knowledge and experience

  • ability in organizing training/workshop, conference, etc.

  • willingness for participating in local and overseas training/workshops

  • willingness to stay for a long time with the organization
     

Salary & Benefits

  • Salary Scale: Rs. 100,000 – 7 x 8,000 – Rs. 156,000 p.m. (increment step with experience)

  • Cost of living allowance of Rs. 7,800/=

  • Both local and overseas trainings/workshops

  • Financial support to obtain necessary certification and for professional development
