We celebrated our 30th anniversary in 2019. Sri Lanka's National Research and Education Network (NREN) began in 1989 to connect the country's academic and research institutions. LEARN has stayed dedicated to providing network services to these communities and promoting collaboration among them.
LEARN currently has 18 full members, 16 associate members, and 25 affiliate members, with new additions since the last annual report. The network now includes 130 fibre connections, an increase of 25. Governed by the Articles of Association from 2009, full memberships were initially granted to the University Grants Commission and universities under the University Act of 1978. Legal entities involved in research and education, such as higher learning institutes, R&D institutes, and other educational organisations, can become associate or affiliate members.
The Board of Directors (BoD) of LEARN consists of seventeen members, representing each of the seventeen full-member institutions. The BoD is chaired by the representative of the University Grants Commission. Each director holds office for a period of one year. They may be re-appointed by the respective full-member institutions for further terms.
